Junior Section

The junior section was started in 1993 by Don and Annette Jones and has steadily grown over the years. Young people are welcome from the ages of seven to sixteen and we have qualified coaches at all levels.

Juniors meet on Monday evenings between 6.00 and 8.00pm for coaching and in 2012 we will again be entering the East Surrey Colts League at under 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16 age levels.

We have an agreement with the Newdigate Endowed Church of England Infants School whereby we run an 'introduction to cricket' course on the Brocus for six weeks during the summer term and we have a similar arrangement at the Weald Church of England Primary School. During the spring term we run courses at St Paul's, St. Martin's, St. John's, the Weald and North Downs Primary Schools for Y5 & 6 girls. As a result of this twenty keen girls attended a course at Newdigate on Tuesday afternoons..

We work very closely with Surrey County Cricket Club and recommend promising players to the county and every year eight juniors are selected for special coaching at the Surrey Cricket Centre under the Russell Haigh Bursary. We have a presentation evening when trophies are presented at each age group, often by a well known cricket celebrity.

We have two recently refurbished nets, an artificial pitch, a bowling machine, Flicx wickets, cricket mats and catching cradles and equipment such as bats, pads, helmets etc.

A happy day at the Oval

We also take a group to the Oval to see at least one first class match as guests of the County.

Coaching night has also developed into a social evening for parents who can often be seen sitting under the trees and catching the last of the evening sunshine with a cool glass of wine.

We recognise the large step from junior to senior cricket, so to assist with this transition we now have a Saturday 3rd XI and on Sundays we play in the Surrey Trust Development League. The 40 over matches are played in coloured clothing, kindly sponsored by Kuoni Travel, and eight players have to be under the age of 18 with four under 16. Last year was our first encounter in this form of cricket and the experience was enjoyed by young and old.

County Squad for 2012....

Congratulations to Finn Osborne, George Warne, Andrew Kehl and Charlie Wyllie who have all been selected for County District training during the winter and well done Evie Spreadbury who will be training with the full county under 13 girls squad. Commiserations to those who didn't get selected - keep practicing hard as there is always next year. You are not alone as there were 250 young players who didn't make it which illustrates just how high the standard is.
