Saturday 1st XI Reports

06/06/09 Ockham (H)
Newdigate 1st XI  145 all out  vs.  Ockham 1st XI  146-2

This was always going to be a difficult weekend for Newdigate as a WHOLE team of players were at a wedding and many of the top junior players were also unavailable for various reasons.

The first eleven played Ockham and on a wet pitch batted first and soon found themselves in trouble at 33-4. A spirited response from Ruky Wickremasinghe (42) and Charlie Major (24) saw the score to 94 but after they were both out to mis-timed pull shots, only Mark Rance (26) reached double figures as Newdigate subsided to 145 from just 41 overs. If the batsmen had set their store to play 48 overs then a total of 180 would have been attainable. All the Ockham bowlers performed well, especially R.Allen who took 6-48 from thirteen overs.

Ockham had learnt from Newdigate's innings the virtues of playing straight and after they lost an early wicket R. Montgomerie (59 no) and A. Doherty (45) pretty well secured the match for the visitors with a well compiled partnership of 74 with Doherty being paricularly severe on anything bowled short. Ockham duly reached the target in the 72nd over of the match.

 08/08/09 Ockham (A)

Ockham 1st XI  175-4        v         Newdigate 1st XI  171

Newdigate's title aspirations suffered a huge dent as they slipped to defeat against relegation threatened Ockham for the second time this season.

Winning the toss and electing to bat,  Richard Callcut (20) and Matt Clarke (24) started well.  Dan Jones (31) and Matt Homewood (19) moved the score on, but Newdigate were never able to get the run rate much above 3 an over.  This was due in particular to S. Naqvi, who bowled his 15 overs straight through with no reward, but who gave very little away.  The chief beneficiary of Naqvi's control was Rehman Butt, who picked up 5 for 59 at the other end as Newdigate tried to accelerate.  Des Harris chipped in with 22 for Newdigate, but with wickets falling regularly in the pursuit of quick runs, the visitors were dismissed for 171 in the 46th over.

With the ball, Ben Crook and particularly Allan Cooper, beat the bat on a regular basis, but werent able to find the elusive early wickets that Newdigate required.  Rimmington (32) and Lambert (52) rode their luck to move Ockham into a winning position.  The introduction of spin brought Ruky Wickremasinghe 3 quick wickets, but Doherty (28) and Yusuf Naqvi (29not out) saw the home team to a much needed victory that moves them out of the relegation zone.

Newdigate drop into 4th place.  Leaders South Nutfield also lost, so the main beneficiaries of the weekends action were Westcott, who won a low scoring game against Brockham, and move to the top of the Surrey Downs League Div 1 table
