27/06/09 Albury (A)
Albury      181-8        v        Newdigate      227-7

After back to back wins, Newdigate travelled to struggling Albury with high hopes.  However, it would prove to be a frustrating day as the visitors couldnt quite produce enough to claim the victory.

Asked to bat first, Newdigate made the perfect start, negating the early swing to build an opening stand of 116.  The bulk of these came from the bat of captain Richard Callcut who made a sparkling 83 before falling to the spin of Barnardo.  Partner Matt Clarke had been content to play the anchor role in seeing off the dangerous Owen Kinnes, and only fell when the opening bowler returned for a second spell having made a patient 39.

This solid start set things up for another good partnership of 72 between Dan Jones (49 not out) and Ruky Wickremasinghe (42).  However, a flurry of quick wickets then fell in the pursuit of quick runs, and Newdigate had to settle for a declaration at 227-7 from 45 overs.

Albury were able to keep things in check with the spin of Barnardo and Grieveson.

Albury also started well on the quick pitch and lightening outfield, but their reply was interrupted by injury to Goodchild (24) who had to retire hurt after being hit in the face by debutant leg spinner Jack Bowley.

After this setback, only Grieveson (26) and Ashton (30) were able to make any impact, as Ben Crook (4-44) and Sam MacDonald (3-49) took regular wickets.  However, Kinnes then made a determined 42 not out to see his team to a draw.

Newdigate will rue a couple of dropped catches, and not bowling enough balls on the stumps in the final overs, allowing this game to slip away.  With all the other teams above them drawing, this was definitely a missed opportunity.  Albury meanwhile have slipped into the relagation zone after having started the season strongly.

Albury 132 all out vs Newdigate 133-2

Newdigate hosted Albury in their final league match of the season needing to win and for other results to go in their favour to win the league. Albury won the toss and elected to bat on a dry and what looked like a good batting track. Newdigate got off to the dream start with speedster Ben Crook taking the wicket of J. Bernardo off the first ball of the innings. From there onwards the home team built the preasure on the Albury batsmen not giving them any loose deliveries to score fromf.Gate had to wait for the second wicket to fall as Tom Bernardo and Aston took the score to 48 and in the 13th over of the innings a running mix up between them gave the home side the break through they wanted.Trevor Voss came to the crease and with Grieveson tried to take the attack to the bowlers before Sam Macdonald took the wicket of Voss for 18. Albury's innings came to an abrupt end from being 102 for 3 wickets to 132 all out as  the home team bowlers pressed home the advantage and gave Newdigate an under par score to chase.Crook 3 for 34 and Macdonald 2 for 45 was well suported by Ruky Wickremasinghe who finished with figures of 3 for 31.

In reply the home team skipper Richard Callcut and Matt Homewood took the attack to the bowlers and scored freely to keep the scoring rate high. Homewood reching his maiden fifty for the club before falling for an excellent 60 that included 5 fours and 5 sixes.Callcut and Dan Jones then took the home team to the finish before Jones was out with only one run needed to win the game.Callcut who had a superb League season scoring yet another fifty and passing 700 league runs in the process. Newdigate taking the much needed 36 points but only to hear the news that Westcott had beaten South Nutfield which meant that the they had to settle for a very creditable second place in the Surrey Downs League.
