24/07/2010 - Brockham Green (h) Newdigate 173 Brockham Green 80 After back to back wins, Newdigate went into this game just behind leaders Westcott, whilst Brockham were sitting just outside the relegation zone. However for long periods, this match threatened to throw the form book out of the window! The visitors won the toss, and elected to bowl on a green wicket, and immediately made inroads. Chris Weill and Jez Palmer (2-28) took a couple of early wickets each, and Newdigate were reeling at 12-4. Ruky Wickremasinghe (35) and Hiten Patel (15) briefly stopped the rot, but Weill continued to take wickets and finished with 5 for 53 from his 15 over allocation. When Wickremasinghe fell with the score at 82-8, Newdigate looked doomed, but enter Allan Cooper who has been on form with the bat this season. The number 10 took the attack to the Brockham bowlers, and his quickfire 69 turned the balance of the match. He received valiant support from Tim Pople who compiled a patient 31, and their partnership of 89 was a club record for the 9th wicket (until the 3rd XI arrived home to announce this had been beaten!). Newdigate's total of 173 all out was below par, but the momentum and shifted to such an extent, that Brockham were never able to get back into the game. Newdigate openers Cooper, and Des Harris, stifled the flow of runs to a trickle, and picked up a wicket each. Only Paul Tipping (22) made any progress, but the introduction of Ben Crook prompted his demise, and Crook's 7 over spell yielded 4 wickets for just 15 runs. Captain Gerard Weide was looking good on 36, but when home captain, Richard Callcut, turned to the spin of Wickremasinghe the game came to an abrupt end as he picked up the last 4 wickets for just 1 run in 10 balls! The visitors dismissed for just 80 With all of the top three winning, there is no real change at the top of the Surrey Downs League Div 1 table. Brockham look to have a reasonable cushion, but will still be looking nervously at the teams below them.
