04/09//2010 - Caterham (h) - Friendly

Newdigate 244-4                        Caterham 241-9

Having completed their league campaign, Newdigate hosted Caterham in a friendly.  These teams have always had competitive matches, and this was no exception.

Having been asked to bat first, Caterham lost an early wicket, but Wilson and March built a solid partnership.  Newdigate's youthful bowling attack struggled to contain the two batsmen, and it wasn't until captain Richard Callcut (2-21) was introduced, that Wilson (37) was dismissed to a sharp catch by keeper Bill Turner.  Grace, Parrett and Congelon all made contributions, but the innings was built around a century from March, who was eventually dismissed in a fine spell at the death by Under 14, Alex Miller (3-57).  Opener Ben Crook (3-18) also returned to stem the flow of runs in the final overs, and help to keep the visitors to a manageable 241-9 from their 40 overs.

In reply, Callcut started positively and found the boundary on a regular basis.  Under 14 opener, Jack Wyllie, provided good support, but realised with his captain in full flow, that it was his job to push for singles.  With the score on 120, Callcut powered passed his second century in as many innings, and the score was up to 170 from 28 overs when Wyllie was dismissed for 33 by the leg spin of Wilson.  A second wicket fell next ball, but Callcut had moved up to 144 before he too fell to the same bowler.  His innings included 22 fours and 3 sixes.

There was still work to be done to reach the total, but a quickfire 41 from Jason Wharam had all but seen Newdigate to their target when he fell, and the victory was finally reached with an over to spare.  Wilson took all four Newdigate wickets to fall.
