East Horsley 144           Newdigate 145-8

Newdigate travelled to East Horsley in Division 1 of the Surrey Downs League, with both sides looking for their first win after disappointment on the opening day.

Having agreed to reduce the game to 75 overs due to the inclement weather, home captain Tim Drake won the toss and elected to bat.  In tricky conditions, the early East Horsley batsmen scored quickly, and looked well placed at 66-2.  However, once Newdigate took the pace off the ball and turned to the medium pace of captain Richard Callcut (5-37), and off spin of Salman Hussain (4-25), the innings subsided to 144 all out from 37 overs

Ollie Carpenter escaped an early run out chance, and was the mainstay of the innings with 55 before being 9th man out.  Apart from him, only J. Hall (25), made any impact as the home team faltered.

Whilst not as many as East Horsley would have liked, it was still going to be tricky for the visitors to chase down on a wicket with plenty in it for the bowlers.

This proved to be the case as Newdigate lost the in form Callcut LBW off his third ball.  The home side however will be ruing their missed chances, as they put down four catches in the opening overs off youngster Matt Clarke.  Clarke, along with Dan Jones (21), took advantage of the missed opportunities, and at 73-1, the chase was looking comfortable.  However, three quick wickets turned the tables, and slowed the run rate, and the visitors now looked in trouble at 77-4.

This bought Charlie Major (20) in to join Clarke, and together they added a crucial 50 partnership in good time to seize back the initiative, and take Newdigate to the brink of victory.  There would be a further twist though, as both fell in quick succession.  Clarke made an excellent 69 to take full advantage of his earlier let offs.  Two further wickets then also fell, and it was left to Tim Pople, and Ben Crook to scramble the winning runs.

This was an exciting game, played in good spirits, in atrocious conditions!

The result moves Newdigate up to 2nd in the league.  With no team having managed to win their opening two games, the table is very close.  East Horsley are down in 9th, but it must surely only be a matter of time before they register their first win

Newdigate 251 vs. East Horsley 166

On a scorching hot day, and with half the team nursing hangovers from Vice Captain Ben Crook's stag do the night before, an under strength and out of form Newdigate hosted East Horsley who had won their last four games.

Winning the toss, Richard Callcut chose to bat, and the scoreboard had raced to 40 when the captain (21) was the first of Jason Launder's 3 wickets.  Contributions followed from Dan Jones (27), Ruky Wickremasinghe (22) and Kris Skarzynski (17), but the innings was build around 16 year old Matt Clarke who batted right through for 83 not out.  This anchor role set things up for number nine, Allan Cooper, to launch some fireworks at the end of the innings with a quickfire 53, and move the home side to a competitive 251 all out.

In reply, East Horsley lost an early wicket, but looked well set at 100-1 with Launder (52) and Garlick (46) going well.  Callcut had belatedly introduced Crook to the attack, and he slowly found his range in an unbroken 13 over spell and removed both batsmen.  As wickets tumbled, East Horsley were caught between chasing runs, and saving the game, and Crook finished with 7-48 as the visitors subsided to 166 all out with 3 overs to spare

The win moves Newdigate back up to 2nd in the table whilst East Horsley slip down to 4th.  Leaders Westcott maintained their lead with a comfortable win over Ockham
