15/05/2010 - Headley Old Freemans (h)

Newdigate 180 vs. Headley Old Freemans 182-1

Newdigate's stuttering start to the season continued as they were soundly beaten by Headley.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bat, Newdigate lost the in form Matt Clarke early, but captain Richard Callcut (42) and Dan Jones (36) moved the home side to 98 for 1 with a fluent partnership.

However, when both fell in quick succession, Newdigate crumbled to 145-8.  The chief tormentor was Tom Hufton (6-34), and it took a defiant effort from the lower order, led by Tim Pople (15), to nudge his team up to 180.

On a flat track, this always looked short, and Headley made light work of picking off their target in 31 overs.  Ben Crook finally found some rhythm, and took the only wicket to fall, but Simon Camp (98 not out), and Kerry (71 not out) combined to take the visitors to a comfortable win that leaves both teams in mid table

Headley Old Freemans 179         Newdigate 274-5

Newdigate travelled to the picturesque Old Freemans ground and avenged their early season defeat with a comprehensive victory.

Asked to bat first, Newdigate's in form opening pair of Richard Callcut and Matt Clarke proceeded steadily and after 20 overs were 94 without loss.  From here they accelerated the scoring, and compiled a mammoth partnership of 202, the sixth highest partnership in the club's history.  Callcut had just reached his second century in three games when Clarke fell for 72.  Callcut then fell almost immediately after for 101 and it was left to Jason Wharam (29 not out) and Allan Cooper (19 not out) to push the score up to a commanding 274-5 at the declaration.

With the threat of relegation looming, Headley had to go after the total positively, but were soon on the back foot as Allan Cooper (4-45) removed the dangerous Camp, Hopper, and Kerry.  Home captain, James Moss (39) and youngster George Seymour (28) rebuilt, but once both had been dismissed with the score on 137, any chance of chasing down the total was gone.

Headley reassessed their target, and went after the 196 runs that would earn them 4 points for the losing draw.  However, this adventure led to the loss of regular wickets, and only Holliday (25) made a significant contribution as Newdigate snared the final wicket with an over to go, and the home side on 179.  Ruky Wickremasinghe (4-46) and Ben Crook (2-53) were the major contributors for Newdigate

With Westcott losing, this result pushes Newdigate to within a handful of points of the league leaders.
