Headley Old Freemans    77        v         Newdigate      185

Inconsistent Newdigate won the toss and chose to bat, hoping to erase the memories of disasterous batting collapses in the two previous defeats.

15 overs in, this game appeared to be heading the same way as the visitors subsided to 45-6.  Hammond was the chief tormentor picking up 5 quick wickets, but the majority of Newdigate batsmen will look at poor shot selection as the cause of their demise, rather than too many demons in the bowling.

Unlike previous weeks however, Newdigate were able to rescue the situation.  South African, Des Harris rode his luck in an effort to hit his side out of trouble, and raced to a quickfire 50.  As wickets fell at the other end, the priority remained not just to score runs, but to also use up overs in the game.  Newdigate were therefore delighted to last until the 42nd over and reach 185 all out.  Harris running out of partners on 87 not out.

In reply, the home team never got started.  6 players failed to score as Allan Cooper (5-29) and Ben Crook (3-8) blew away the top order.  After 10 overs, Headley were 21 for 6.  Tom Hufton (15) and Mark Hopper (21) attempted to restore some pride, but when Sam MacDonald (2-23) removed both then they subsided to 77 all out in just 25 overs.

Headley Old Freemans 192-9 vs. Newdigate 193-2

Newdigate hosted Headley in a game that they had to win to keep their championship hopes alive, but it was the visitors who started strongly having won the toss and electing to bat

Simon Camp (18) and David Hayward (15) built the foundations before both were removed by Ben Crook. Tom Hufton then made a patient 43 before Holliday (49) threatened to cut loose. A marathon spell of 15 overs, 3 for 29 from Sam MacDonald kept Headley in check and, with Ruky Wickremasinghe also picking up 3 wickets, Newdigate were happy to see Headley declare at the 45 over mark for 192-9.

With young opening partner Matt Clarke looking out of sorts, Newdigate captain Richard Callcut took it upon himself to keep the scoreboard moving. Whilst the Headley bowlers threatened at times, they were never able to retain the control that would keep the run rate down. Newdigate cantered to an opening stand of 165 before Callcut holed out for 86 with a century beckoning. In the meantime, Clarke had found a bit of form in the second half of his innings, and was picking off boundaries himself. He was still there at the end on 69 as Newdigate completed a comfortable victory with five overs to spare.

15 year old Clarke will miss the final two games of the season on holiday, but he can be proud of his return of over 300 runs at an average just under 30 in his first full season of league cricket.
