Westcott 217 v Newdigate 244-6
This was a crucial game in Division 1 of the Surrey Downs League, as the second and third placed teams met in an effort to close the gap on leaders South Nutfield.
Westcott captain Alan Pickering won the toss and asked the visitors to bat on a damp wicket, and with a forecast of showers.
Paul Hughes (3-58) began aggressively, testing young opener Matt Clarke with a succession of short balls, before dismissing him for 8. However, Newdigate captain Richard Callcut went on the offensive to throw the paceman off his length, and hit 3 sixes in his quickfire 49.
In worsening weather, Dan Jones batted beautifully, and was well assisted by Des Harris (35). With the umpires discussing the playing conditions, and the fielding side keen to call it a day, Callcut decided to take a gamble, and declared as soon as Jones reached his century. Whilst the total of 244-6 was imposing, the home side were given 48 overs to chase it down.
This proved to be the carrot that Westcott needed, and they came out batting positively. Keen to get ahead of the run rate in the event of more showers, Pickering and Musgrave hit sweet boundaries, but both were dismissed before they got into their stride. Paul Downman (42) had started steadily, and when joined by Mike Shaw (64) they set about building a partnership of 86 before the opener was dismissed. Tom Shrives (21) then moved the score up to 144-3, and the home team looked on top.
Then came the decisive moment of the game, as the visiting captain took off his spinners, who were struggling with the wet ball, and introduced himself to the attack. Almost immediately Shaw was dismissed by one that nipped back, and next ball, Dan Wadey lost his off stump to one that moved away. When Shrives was also bowled by another off cutter, the tide had turned. Westcott still had plenty of time to pick off the total, but were fast running out of batsmen.
Mike Deloford was joined by Paul Shaw, and they combined to move the score from 170-8, to 213 before Callcut struck again to remove the latter for 13. Opener Ben Crook then returned to finally remove Deloford for a well made 26 to clinch the visitors an invaluable win. Callcut rolled back the years to finish with 5-37, whilst Crook and Allan Cooper took two wickets each.
The win moves Newdigate up to 2nd as both teams try to catch South Nutfield, who also won |
