Newdigate 175-9 vs. Capel 177-
On a beautiful sunny day Newdigate 2nds travelled just a few miles for the first of two games against local rivals Capel. With Newdigate batting first on an un-seasonally dry wicket, which as it turned out, proved difficult to score on, the opening partnership was short lived with the loss of their first wicket in the fourth over. But a superb innings of 58 from Jack Wylie (showing experience and patience far beyond his 14 yrs) got Newdigate back in the early season hunt for runs. He was assisted by the middle order who all chipped in without a major contribution.
All the batsmen found the conditions hard going and at times were pinned down by accurate bowling from the home side. Enter Mike Osbourne 24* (after a long absence from the game) showing how to deal with anything loose in a mixed inning of defence and attack. With a final lusty blow from James Penfold the innings came to a close at 175-9 dec.
In reply Capel started steadily but also found fluency elusive against largely accurate bowling, with most of the batsmen contributing, Grove 23, Paul 22, Spiers 26 and Romoft 22, they eased ever closer to the target. But with a few overs to go there was a final twist to this close fought game with Newdigate grabbing two quick wickets to give them hope of a win. But the cool head of Hinton 27* saw the home side to victory with overs to spare. |
