Saturday 2nd XI Reports

17/04//2010 Graveney (h) - Friendly

Newdigate 2nd XI - 223-8 vs. Graveney - 225-3

Newdigate 2nd XI began their season on a batman's paradise against old friends Graveney.  With the the team's relegation from Surrey Downs League Division 2 still fresh in the mind, skipper Bill Turner knew that Gate had to bat very well this year to challenge in Division 3.  Newdigate batted first on a mid-summer type wicket and jumped off to a flyer with Turner and Under 15's colt, Jack Wyllie putting on an opening partnership of 99 before Turner departed for a well worked 48.  Mark Rance joined young Wyllie at the crease and both went on to hit half centuries with Wyllie getting caught for a very impressive 54 and Rance retiring on 50.  Simon Capel (31) was the only other player to make considerable runs before a batting collapse ensued. The picks of the Graveney bowling were Pradeep Jain (2-25) and Paul Jeffels (3-30)

Newdigate has a new look bowling attack this year with youth being mixed in with experience.  Jose De Castro and Martin Clabby both showed good pace early on and when Clabby removed Rob Davies for a duck, Newdigate were feeling buoyed.  De Castro also got in on the act to remove S.Jain for 4 and at 17 for 2, Newdigate felt like this could be a well earned win.  These thoughts were short lived however, as skipper Paul Jeffels joined Nick Goodburn at the crease. This was the first of 2 consecutive 100+ partnerships and after Goodburn departed for 65, Pradeep Jain (31 not out) joined Jeffels to pour more salt in the Newdigate wounds.  Jeffels eventually reached his century off of 92 balls and finished of with 107 not out.  The only other wicket taker was colt Stevie Kehl, who bowled with good line, length and maturity.

Newdigate travel to Capel next week to try and build on this week's positives before opening their league campaign against Ockham on 1st May.
