Saturday 2nd XI Reports

05/06/2010 Horsley & Send (h)

Horsley & Send 271-6 vs. Newdigate 176 all out

A weakened Newdigate 2nd XI lost to top of the table Horsley and Send by 95 runs at the Brocus on Saturday 5 June.

Asked to bat first, the visitors piled on runs from the outset, despite losing the wicket of the in form P Elscombe in the first over of the match. I Smith, his opening partner was fluent and positive from the start and scored an excellent 139 before falling to the part time bowling of Bill Turner, who picked up three wickets in the latter part of the innings.

D Creber scored 65 in a good second wicket partnership and there were useful contributions from D Ridyard and P Reynolds. Horsley and Send scored 271 for 6 off only 39 overs, but despite the onslaught, the Newdigate youngsters, and those a little older, fielded excellently and generally kept trying throughout.

In their reply Newdigate lost the early wickets of Jack Wyllie (9) and Bill Turner (19), before Mark Rance (17) and Hiten Patel, scoring another fluent fifty, put together a good partnership of 57 in good time, and at this point a challenging response looked possible on a good wicket and with 51 overs to bat.

But after Mark Rance was unluckily given out LBW, the innings gradually subsided and the home side was bowled out for 176 with 14 overs remaining.

Newdigate nevertheless earned the full 5 batting points and 3 bowling points for their endeavours.

Horsley and Send 75 all out, Newdigate 77 for 1

Newdigate's bowling attach was awesome on Saturday. Horsley and Send, top of the division, chose to bat on a good looking wicket after winning the toss, but were soon in trouble, losing opener P Elcombe in the first over of the match, caught by a stunning catch at second slip by Sam MacDonald.

Opening bowlers Mike Kornrumph (12 over, 4 maidens, 26 runs and 4 wickets) and Jose De Castro (7-3-15-1) both bowled with pace, movement and accuracy in the best opening spell of the season, frequently beating the bat and reducing the batsmen to desperation shots in an attempt to get the scoreboard moving.

Prolific opening bat Ian Smith (6), who scored a magnificent 130 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, skied a catch to mid off  in his bid for freedom and was quickly followed by a further 5 wickets to reduce the home side to 47 for 7 when a heavy rain shower struck. The covers were quickly brought on, an early tea taken and some waiting around for the rest of the square to dry out happened before play was resumed. Upon the resumption Newdigate took regular wickets, with excellent bowling from Ben Brearley, young leg spinner Jack Bowley (2 for 11),  and Sam MacDonald (2 for 12),  to finish off the innings – all out for 75. The fielding and catching was excellent in support of the inspired bowlers.

In reply Newdigate set off at an express rate, opener Paul Betteswoth, who scored a century last Saturday, ‘biffed' his way to an excellent quick-fire 30 before trying one belligerent shot too many. Other opener Sam MacDonald (26no) also batted well to see Newdigate home, passing the winning target of 76 runs in just 10 overs.

An excellent day at the office for Newdigate who took the maximum 40 points from the match and reduced the top side to just 1 point.
