North Holmwood 1st XI - 181-2 vs Newdigate 2nd XI 182-2
Newdigate went into this game searching for their first win of the season and considering they were up against high flying North Holmwood, hopes were not high. Skipper Bill Turner won the toss and elected to field with a side that was probably one bowler short. Despite this, Gate bowled with a typically dogged fashion and openers Craig Jones and Pete Pople gave North Holmwood's openers Jordan and Tyers plenty to think about. Both bowlers used variation of pace and shape to keep the runs down and Pople managed to frustrate Jordan (26) into edging one to Simon Capel at 1st slip. This brought Ian Elliot to the crease who had already scored a century in the fixture at the Brocus earlier in the year. He joined Eyers to grind out an 84 partnership before Eyers edged behind off of Jones for 36. This was the cue for Elliot to up the tempo and hit some much needed boundaries on his way to 83 not out.
Having got to 181, North Holmwood made the gutsy decision to declare and allow Newdigate 50 overs at the gettable target. Pople (1 for 41) and Jones (1 for 46) had between them bowled 28 of the overall 40 overs at North Holmwood and deserve a lot of credit.
With 181 set, Bill Turner and Hiten Patel started relatively slowly but knew they were always in the hunt. Patel hit some cracking drives before being dismissed for 38 by Edwards and Turner was ticking along what proved to be a decisive innings. He was joined at the crease by Mark Rance on 117 for 2 and the pair put on an unbeaten 65 partnership in just over 10 overs with both players finding the boundary frequently. With only a few overs to go, Rance (37 not out) decided enough was enough and hit a 20 run over to push Gate to the brink of victory and sealed it an over later. Huge credit must go to Turner (83 not out) for his well judged innings to lead Gate to their first victory of the season.
Next week, Newdigate entertain Ockley in a bottom of the table clash at the Brocus.
