Saturday 2nd XI Reports

15/05/10 Old Woking (a)

Newdigate Saturdays 2nd XI won the toss inserted Old Woking 2nds on, at last, a nice sunny afternoon.

The opening bowling spells by Jose De Castro and Jack Wyllie was tight and restricted the home team to under two runs per over. Stephen Kehl and Tom Ball took over, and both bowled quite tidily, but the home side increased the run rate. James Penfold came on to add a bit of variety with his off spin. Bill Turner added more slow stuff after the drinks break, handing over the wicket keeping duties to Mark Rance, and picked up a couple of wickets with rank long hops!

Old Woking continued to increase their run rate and eventually declared at 209 for 4 after 45 overs.

Disaster struck first ball of Newdigate's innings when James Penfold was caught and bowled. Jack Wyllie was solid in his opening role but Simon Capel and Mark Rance went quite cheaply before Hiten Patel came in at number 5 to play a momentous match-winning innings of 84 not out. Hiten started slowly and had a few problems early on, being dropped before reaching 20. Jack Wyllie eventually fell, which brought in skipper Bill Turner.  Hiten Patel went from strength to strength and was ably assisted by his captain, the partnership adding 136 to practically seal victory before Turner was out with 12 runs required.

A very satisfying four wicket victory was eventually earned  with an over to spare.  An excellent and enjoyable game of cricket.

Old Woking 221 all out vs. Newdigate 225-6

Old Woking batted first on a true wicket at the Brocus and through sensible batting looked set to put on a commanding total when they were on 208-2 off 42 overs. Edwards (73), Freeland (32), Living (46) and Dolton (38) all made considerable contributions despite the best efforts of bowlers Campbell, Bowley and Penfold. Suddenly everything changed. Leg spinner, Jack Bowley, who had bowled well all day without luck, in two overs took five wickets for six runs and under 15, Harry Ramsey, who the previous week played his first match for Surrey against Hampshire, bowled a magnificent spell and took 3-9 in 7.3 overs which included five maidens. Old Woking were reeling and were stunned to be all out for 221.
Their bowlers got off to the best possible start by snaring opener, Paul Bettesworth first ball but the patient, Jack Wyllie (20), steadied the ship and Mark Rance (27) came in and played a series of beautiful shots. Suddenly he was stricken by a pain in the chest and was taken immediately to hospital where he is currently undergoing tests. This was the third time in 10 days that an ambulance has been seen on the Brocus. A mid-week player badly damaged his knee and Don Jones was also rushed to hospital with chest pains, but thankfully he was back at the club watching the match and is feeling fine. Some blame Mr Brown's pork pies! But back to the match. The in-form Sam Slade, relishing promotion to the second team, hit a superb 78 which swung the match very much Newdigate's way and he was ably assisted by Bill Turner (25). Slade and Turner both fell but Darren Drew dispelled any doubts by hitting a disciplined 30 not out to guide Newdigate, to what looked earlier in the day, an improbable victory.
