Saturday 2nd XI Reports

19/06/2010 Salfords (a)

Newdigate 2nd XI,  213 for 8 vs.Salfords 2nd XI, 191 all out

Newdigate recorded their third victory of the season, beating Salfords on their home turf by 22 runs with just six balls to spare and gaining 37 valuable points.

Newdigate lost the toss and were invited to bat on a lively wicket, and after losing an early wicket, Jack Wyllie, scoring another 50, and Simon Capel (28) put together a good partnership of  exactly 50 in 13 overs before Capel was eventually caught by an excellent slip catch. The bowling then tightened up, slowing the scoring rate considerably, but patient batting by Wyllie and Mark Rance (19) set up a good platform for the later acceleration to bring up 213 for 8 wickets in 46 overs.

Paul Bettswoth was the main stay of the second half of the innings, scoring an excellent and invaluable 60 runs with great timing and power, including one enormous six swept way over square leg. Paul was well supported by Jose De Castro (15 not out ), batting at no.9 after a mini collapse in the late middle order.

After tea Salfords made a good start, openers K Humphrey (31) and S Elsbey (38) putting together a half century stand  before the wickets started to fall at quite regular intervals. All the Newdigate attack bowled well, Jose De Castro (2-28), Angus Campbell (3-35) and Mike Kornrumph (3-32) all moved the ball around at pace and the persistence earned the wickets.

In the latter stage of the Salford's innings Isaac (22) and Besley (32) batted well to put the home side in with a chance, but good bowing, good fielding and some excellent catching, including a remarkable diving effort by Mark Rance in the slip cordon, saw Newdigate to a thoroughly deserved victory.

Newdigate 2nd XI  v. Salfords 2nd XI, The Brocus, Saturday 21 August 2010

Newdigate  won by 3 wickets

Salfords 170 all out, Newdigate 172 for 7wickets

Newdigate won the toss and asked the visitors to bat at The Brocus on Saturday.

The home side claimed the early wicket of A Ward for a duck and soon took a second to reduce Salfords to 20 for 2. Skipper Greg van Renen steadied the ship and stabilised the innings with a well put together innings of 72, playing some excellent shots mostly with a very straight bat. A Broodryk and A Issac played good supporting roles of 36 and 25 respectively to steer Salfords towards a potentially challenging total.

Steaming in from the top end toward the end of the innings' specialist Charlie Major was then re-introduced into the attack and steamed in from the top end to blow the lower order away to reduce the visitors to 170 all out – he took 4 wickets in 4 overs for just 6 runs in a very lively and devastating spell and finished with overall figures of 8-1-28-5.

Newdigate set about their task in workmanlike fashion, John Callcut and Paul Bettesworth putting on a steady 38 runs before JC was caught trying to increase the run rate. Thomas Ball got an unplayable away cutter two balls later and Simon Capel soon departed, both for ducks. Two more quick wickets fell and now Newdigate were in potential trouble at 82 for 5. But Paul Bettesworth was still there and the century maker of three weeks ago did it again, this time 105 not out – congratulations again Paul. Skipper Bill Turner (14) and James Penfold with a sensible 21 supported Paul in nearly reaching the target.

Matt Dilger, sitting in the pavilion and not expecting to bat with just 3 runs needed said “I've never hit the winning run”. Anyway James Penfold was caught trying to hit the winning runs and Matt duly went out and stroked his first ball for four – match over!
