Saturday 2nd XI Reports

22/05/10 Shere (h)

Shere 215 all out vs. Newdigate 216-8

Newdigate 2nd's had another good win last Saturday at The Brocus, chasing 215 in 42 overs to beat Shere1st XI by 2 wickets.

The opposition were asked to bat first on a hot afternoon. Opening bowlers Mike Kornrumpf and Jack Wyllie bowled tightly and Shere were soon in trouble at 78 for 3 in the 20th over but were held together by J Maguire, who scored a patient 43.

Ben Brearley came on to claim 4 for 41 in reducing Shere to 108 for 6 after 30 overs. Enter M Smethurst, who's initial stubborn defence belied his later belligerent hitting which included 22 off the last over of the innings – he scored 72 runs and, ably supported by E Cooper, brought up a total of 215 in 48 overs, which seemed unlikely not very much earlier.

Newdigate's reply stuttered in the early stages, losing Turner and Skarzinski cheaply before Mark Rance came in at no.4 to hit an excellent quick-fire 64 to up the run rate and set the momentum for the rest of the innings.

Opener Jack Wyllie continued his consistent form with a sensible knock of 56 and there were also good contributions from Hiten Patel (21), Mike Kornrumpf (19) and Ben Brearley (27no) to ease Newdigate nearly home. Needing four, victory was achieved only off the first ball of the final over, with nerves jangling in the pavilion – not so for Ben Brearley out in the middle, he hit it for six!
