Newdigate 2nd XI - 211-6
South Park Manor 2nd XI - 212-7
Newdigate's 2nd XI travelled to South Park Manor on Saturday to attempt to finish their league season on a high note. With South Park needing only 7 points to secure safety in Surrey Downs Division 3, they had no hesitation in putting Newdigate into bat on a drying wicket. The in-form Paul Bettesworth opened the innings damp conditions with 24 advantageous runs and in addition to this, u15 colt Jack Wyllie also battled his way to 16. Both stood resolute against some precise South Park bowling but ultimately fell victim to the tough conditions. Mark Rance, returning to the side after a long term absence, was slightly different in his approach to the game and he bludgeoned boundaries to all parts of the ground. He was joined in 2 two successive 50 partnerships and this helped speed up the run rate. The first was with fellow long term absentee, Craig Jones, who smashed 2 huge sixes before being caught out to an excellent catch and the second was with skipper Bill Turner, who was using all of his experience to pick the gaps in the field on his way to quick-fire 26. Rance however, was the true hero of the innings and he finished on 96 not out despite the excellent bowling of Imran (2-42) and Mullen (2-67)
With a decent total of 211 on the board, Newdigate were hopeful of victory, but a weakened bowling line up had to perform if this was to be the case. Wyllie took the early wicket of Bullen and hopes were raised in the field, but a 60 partnership between Elsey and Freeman curbed the heightened hopes. Once both players were dismissed by Mike Kornrumpf (2-72), spin seemed to be the order of the day with Callcut, Dilger and Penfold trying their luck to get wickets. Only Callcut however, had any success on the spin front and he took 4-42 before a 90 run partnership between the big hitting pair of Imran (66) and Mullen (35) guided South Park to victory.
