Ashtead 146-7 vs. Newdigate 147-5
A captains innings by Ruky Wickremasinghe was the back bone of Newdigate’s thumping win against Ashtead Cricket Club on Sunday. Chasing 147 for victory the home team made very light work of the Ashtead bowling attack with Wickremasinghe powerfully putting any bad deliveries to the boundary. He was well supported by Mark Rance (14) and Craig Jones (18). Wickremasinghe was out with the score on 135 for an excellent 91 which included 10 fours & 6 mighty sixes. Wickremasinghe just missed out on a well deserved ton. Newdigate reached the target in only 26 overs. For Ashtead young Don Sibley was the only bowler to keep the pressure on and finished with figures of 3 for 24 in seven overs.
Earlier Ashtead was asked to bat after losing the toss. The opening pair of father and son M Sibley & D Sibley got things started on a positive note even with some very accurate bowling from Newdigate. Opening bowler Sam MacDonald bowled through to finish an excellent spell of 8 overs for only 12 runs and the prized scalp of Rob Mumpford to go with it. The home team bowlers all kept the pressure on the batting side taking regular wickets. Only a last dash in the slog overs gave the visiting side an under par score of 146 from their allocated 40 overs. Ben Crook 2 for 23 and Wickremasinghe 1 for 5 gave good support to U15 colt Stephen Kehl who picked up 3 for 23 in his spell of 7 overs. |
