Newdigate Dev 240-7 bt Cheam 217 all out
After last weeks loss due to a dismal batting performance, Newdigate made amends by winning the Development clash against Cheam at home.
After winning the toss and electing to bat on the used track at the Brocus, Newdigate's skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe and Alex Southon started off steadily making sure there were no early hiccups this time around. Once they got used to the pace of the track both started to find the boundary with ease. The pair put on 89 before Southon was out for 23. Thomas Ball joined his skipper and put on a further 50 runs for the second wicket.
Wickremasinghe went on to bring up only his third fifty for the season. Once the skipper was out for a well made 70 in the 26th over the platform was set for the middle and late order batters to set a challenging target. Some hard hitting From Ball (32) and Matt Clarke (33) made sure Newdigate passed the 200 mark and with Pete Trower finishing on 15no saw the home team reach 240 before the end of their allocated 40 overs. For Cheam spinner Cohen had figures of 3 for 45.
In reply Cheam started off aggressively with 12 runs coming off the first over. But Stephen Kehl got his man in the third over having him caught attempting another pull through square leg. Des Harris and Alex Southon took a further 2 wickets and at the halfway mark Cheam were in deep trouble with 5 wickets down for on 89 runs on the board with only Paul Cohen batting well to take his side towards the target. Cohen went on to bring up his fifty before falling to Bertie Edwards.
A 7th wicket partnership Between Hendry (47) and Bracher (35) gave a further glimmer of hope for the visiting side but with the asking rate always climbing Newdigate kept the pressure on the batters. Southon coming back on to bowl took the wickets of both set batters and with that gave Newdigate a well deserved win. Southon finishing with figures of 3 for 40 and Edwards 2 for 55 were the chief wicket takers for Newdigate.
