Sunday 1st XI Reports

15/08/2010 - Coldharbour (a)

Newdigate Sun 1s 232/8  Coldharbour 194/8  -  Match Drawn

Newdigate traveled to the picturesque Coldharbour grounds to take on their Sunday side in a friendly encounter. After been put in to bat on a wet wicket due to the rain on the day before it looked like batting was going to be hard as the ball skidded on and at times kept low and slow. Gate lost the wicket of Alex Southon early on to a well judged catch by home captain John Hopper in the 5th over of the innings.

Dan Jones, making a rare appearance on a Sunday then joined Ruky Wickremasinghe and the pair took the visiting sides scoring rate forward. Wickremasinghe looked set for a big score on the day but his innings was cut short due to a miscommunication between the pair to be run out for a well made 31. Hiten Patel then paired up with Jones and at the 25 over drinks break Newdigate were well set to pose a big score.

Both batters went on to bring up their respective fifties before they were out to some good catching in the deep trying to accelerate the scoring rate. Patel made an excellent 57 and Jones a solid 54. The lower order batters made sure that Newdigate crossed to 200 run mark and helped the visiting side to declare on 232 in 38 overs, which given the wicket and outfield conditions was a very competitive score. Marcus Bygraves and A. Jones picked up 2 wickets each for the home team.

Newdigate skipper Matt Clarke opened the bowling with his left arm lively pace and with Paul Butterworth's all hands and legs action medium pacers. The home team opening pair of Hopper and Conway were tied down by the two bowlers with some accurate line and length bowling. Even though the break thru did not come the bowling pair kept things tight to build the pressure on the run chase.

Once the batting pair decided to open up and find the boundaries the opportunity to take some wickets came on and Hopper was the first to fall to the bowling of Des Harris for a well made 41 and was soon followed by Conway (42) falling to the same bowler. Dan Jordan though was at the crease and looked set to take on the bowlers as he regularly found the boundary with ease before falling to a good catch by Clarke off the bowling of Southon for a well made 47.

Wickremasinghe then came on and captured further 3 wickets to put a halt on the run rate but Coldharbour tail held on to take the team to a draw in a very entertaining game of cricket. Coldharbour finishing on 194 for the loss of 8 wickets in 37 overs. Southon and Wickremasinghe both finishing with bowling figures of 3 for 15 each with Harris taking 2 for 52 for the visiting side.
