Sunday 1st XI Reports

08/08/2010 - Dulwich (h) - STDL

Newdigate 308-6 Bt Dulwich 171 all out.

Newdigate finished their Development League season on a high with a thumping win against Dulwich at home. After being put in to bat Newdigate were soon in trouble as they lost Alex Southon in the second ball of the innings before the scorers had been troubled. Dulwich opening bowlers Mustafa Kamaal then added two further wickets to his name before stepping out the attack due to pulling his hamstring. From being 3 wickets down for only 20 runs on the board the home team needed to get a partnership going and this was provided by the ex skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe and the skipper for the day young Matt Clarke. Both batters looked in control as they took on the young bowling attack of Dulwich and rotated the strike well to keep the scoreboard ticking. Wickremasinghe in particular was very severe on anything that was short and wide finding the boundary with ease. At the 20 over drinks break Newdigate were well placed with a score of 108 and the set batters in and plenty of hitters to follow.

Wickremasinghe went on to bring up his fifty with another boundary. The pair put on 128 runs for the 4th wicket before Wickremasinghe was out for an excellent 80. Clarke then took over to bring up his fifty and also was out for a well compiled 80 runs. With the base set by these two batters the last ten overs yielded 127 runs for the home side with Des Harris (55*) and Henry Warne (31*) both punishing the bowlers with some big hits and good running between the wickets. Newdigate finishing on 308 for the loss of 6 wickets in their allocated 40 overs.

In reply Dulwich were soon on the back foot as the young bowling attack of Stephen Kehl and Warne ran thru the batting line up to have them reeling at 46 for the loss of six wickets in just 7 overs. Kehl finishing with figures of 3 for 24 and Warne adding 3 wickets to his name to go with the runs he made earlier in the day. The only resistance for the visiting side came from Miles Hillgrove and Sam Allen as they took the chance to free their arms and provide some sort of saving grace in a losing cause for Dulwich. Hillgrove made an excellent 64 before falling to Ben Crook and when Allen was bowled by Clarke for a well made 46, Dulwich finished on 171 all out to give the home team a well deserved win.

This year's Development league campaign has yet again provided Newdigate with many positives with the younger talent coming to their own and showing what the future holds for the club. Many thanks must be given to umpire Paul Griffiths, scorer Julian Ball and to all the parents and supporters for all the help and support provided all thru the season.
