Sunday 1st XI Reports

05/09/2010 - Findon (h)

Newdigate 269/ 4 dec beat Findon 237 all out.

Newdigate won the toss and elected to bat on a track that had produced nearly 500 runs the day before. Findon's opening bowler Jack Metters should have taken the wicket of opener Ruky Wickremasinghe three times in the first over with all three chances given not taken by his fellow team mates.

With this major let off Wickremasinghe made Findon pay dearly as he and Paul Bettesworth started to find the boundary with little trouble and the home team were racking up the runs at a rate. Both batters quickly went past their respective fifties with Bettesworth getting there first with yet another boundary. Two overs later Wickremasinghe followed and passed his fifty as well. Findon skipper Jamie Lewis rotated his young bowlers around but could not find the breakthrough needed and at the 20 over drinks break the home team was well placed with 139 for no loss.

After the break the opening stand of 162 in just 23 over was broken as Bettesworth fell to the bowling of Josh Stevens for a well made 84 which included 12 fours and 3 mighty sixes. Wickremasinghe though went on to bring up his first hundred for the season with a boundary to the delight of his fellow team mates. He and Hiten Patel put on 46 before Wickremasinghe was out for an excellent 102 (18 fours and 1 six).

Using this platform the home team soon went past the 250 mark before the declaration came with the score on 269 / 4 in just 38 overs. Patel 31, Mark Rance 23, Jason Wharam 16 all assisting in this score. For the visiting side young Curtis Howel was the most effective with figures of 0/38 in ten overs. The wickets were shared around.

After the break Findon lost an early wicket to the bowling of Ben Crook. But the visiting side's skipper Jamie Lewis and opener Josh Stevens put on a great fight back to the home team with some counter attacking batting and finding the boundary at ease. Newdigate too rotated the bowlers but could not find the breakthrough and with the dropped catch of Stevens off the bowling of Matt Clarke things looked like it was going to take the familiar root from the first innings. Stevens in particular was very aggressive and reached his fifty with a mighty six over long on.

At the drinks break Findon too were well placed with just the loss of the one wicket and the score reading 140. With the 20 mandatory overs starting and still needing over six runs per over to win Findon lost the wicket of Stevens for and excellent 94. Ben Crook coming back on to the attack to take his wicket.

From there onwards the batting side soon faded away as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Lewis too fell to the bowling of Crook and with the wicket of star batsmen Jack Metters (0) falling to a well judged catch in the deep by Wickremasinghe, Findon had to switch tactics and play out a draw. With the last over of the day starting the batting side had young Howel batting very sensibly but he was run out on the last ball of the day by Patel as his partner tried to take a risky run that was never there to give Newdigate a win by 32 runs. Crook finishing with 4 wickets for the home team. A very exciting game of cricket played and enjoyed by both teams.
