Newdigate 183 for 6 vs. Frensham 179 for 9
Newdigate put in an excellent performance to beat Frensham in their annual friendly encounter. After winning the toss and asking Frensham to bat first, the home side quickly moved to 48 in just 5 overs before speedster Ben Crook striking twice in two balls and only just missing out on a hat-trick. From there onwards the visiting side took regular wickets to keep the run rate down. Young leg spinner Jack Bowley in particular getting a lot of rip from the track. With the score on 88 for 7 the tail started to wag for the home side and with Skipper Adam Page blasting his way to 48 not out ( all in fours and sixes), Frensham declared on 179 for 9. Ben Crook finished with 3 wickets. Des Harris, Harry Ramsey and Sam Macdonald all chipped in with a scalp each too.
Newdigate’s reply got off to a good start with Skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe (15) and Paul Bettesworth (19) getting in their strides and finding the boundary but both openers departed in the space of two overs. Craig Jones (37) and Matt Clarke (32) kept the score board moving for Newdigate and Jones in particular was quick to punish any bad ball. Needing 60 to win off the mandatory 20 overs mark with only 3 wickets down the visiting side looked like they were going to ease throught but Frensham picked up 3 quick wickets to add some excitement in to the chase. it was then left to Bowley to put his head down and support the hard hitting Macdonald who finished on 53* for Newdigate, reaching his fifty and the hitting the winning runs with a big six over long on. Newdigate winning by 4 wickets with eight overs to spare. |
