Newdigate 231-6 vs Guildford City 232-8
Newdigate Development team visited Guildford City on a very hot and muggy afternoon. After winning the toss and electing to bat Newdigate lost two early wickets and was on the backfoot due to some tight bowling from Guildford’s opening bowlers. It was then up to last weeks hero Matt Jee and Skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe to steady things for the visiting team. Both players started to find the gaps in the field and put the pressure back on to the home side with an excellent 3rd wicket partnership of 111 before Wickremasinghe was given out LBW to leg spinner Karunaratne for a well made 44. Jee went on to bring up his fifty soon after but unlike last week he could not carry on and was out for 51. Some late flurry of runs from Des Harris (32*) and Pete Edwarde (48) gave Newdigate a defendable score of 231 in their 40 overs. For the home team, Rehman 3 for 36 and Karunaratne 2 for 34 shared the wickets.
In reply Guildford City came out all guns blazing and lost the two openers to Gate's young opening bowlers William Bennett (1 for 29) and Harry Ramsey (2 for 43).The home side was then given a big boost by a partnership of 101 for the 3rd wicket between Iqbal and Taylor. Iqbal got to his fifty with a superb cover drive but was out two balls later top edging Jordon Morris (2 for 28) .Once Wickremasinghe got the wicket of Taylor (28) and with the run out of Harrison, Gate got a sniff of a chance to pull things back. But Guildford City's number eight Z. Khan had other ideas and carried his bat out for an excellent 44 runs to see the home side to a hard fought victory with 9 balls to spare. |
