Hurley 65 all vs. Newdigate 66-1
Newdigate travelled to Hurley looking to kick start their nPower Village Cup season. Newdigate won the toss and asked the home team to take first use of the track. The decision was soon to be a good one as the Newdigate opening pair of Ben Crook and Allan Cooper kept the Hurley batsmen in check with some tight and accurate pace bowling. Cooper struck early to get rid of Phil Ridgeway and then Crook followed up with the wicket of G. Lewis. The home team found runs very hard to come by and soon were in further trouble as they lost their third wicket to a run out. Young Jose DeCastro took over from Cooper and struck in his first over too. A further two run outs assisted the visiting side to leave Hurley in deep trouble with not too many runs on the board. Crook and Cooper came back on to finish the innings off in just 25 overs leaving the Newdigate batters needing only 66 runs to win the match. Crook finished his 9 over spell with 2/15.Cooper 2/20 and DeCastro 2/8 along with Richard Callcut 1/19 shared the rest of the wickets.
After a splendid tea, Newdigate openers of Skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe and Callcut set about knocking the runs off in a hurry with both batters dispatching the ball to all parts of the ground. Wickremasinghe fell to a ball that kept below his ankle for an aggressively made 26 but Callcut 28 not out and Paul Bettesworth 5 not out took the visiting side to a comprehensive victory in just 9 overs.
Newdigate will now take on either Purley-on-Thames or Cookham Dean in the regional quarter finals on the 23rd May at the Brocus and will look to extend their run in the competition
