18/04/2010 - Stoke D'Abernon (h)

Newdigate 213-8 vs. Stoke D'Abernon 214-6

Newdigate Sunday 1st's 2010 campaign got underway with a matchagainst Stoke D'Abernon at the Brocus. After winning the toss the home skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe elected to bat on what looked a very dry April wicket. The early honours went to Stoke who had the home team two wickets down in the 5th over with not many runs on the board. Charlie Major sent up to open the innings made 24 before been bowled to leave Newdigate 3 down for 32 runs on the board. Skipper Wickremasinghe and Hiten Patel then put their heads down and batted patiently waiting for the bad balls added 60 runs to steady the home team before Wickremasinghe was out to his opposite number for a well made 35. Patel (30) and Sunday debutante Jason Wharam then continued the platform to get some momentum back on to the batting side. With about ten overs to go for tea break Wharam (62) started to open up and with some lusty blows bought up his second fifty for the weekend. He was well supported by Ben Crook (19*) and added a further 70 runs for the 8th wicket to take the home score to 213 at the break.

In reply Newdigate struck twice early with speedster Crook on top form. Young Trower was then joined by Jack Raymondo and put on and useful 50 run partnership before the latter was bowled by James Penfold. With the runs still coming easily Newdigate spin duo of Wickremasinghe and Salman Hussein came on and tried to pull things back in favour of the home team. Trower (67) went on to bring up his fifty before he was out to the home team Skipper, but Frost was batting with a clear purpose along with Matt Gottschalk opened up and took on the short boundary to bring up his fifty and push Stoke over the winning line with 2 over to spare. Crook finishing with figures of 3 for 30 and Wickremasinghe took two scalps for the home side as well.
