Newdigate 154 all out vs. Thames Ditton 134 all out
Newdigate kick started their Surrey Trust Development League campaign with an impressive win against Thames Ditton at home.
After winning the toss and electing to bat Newdigate got off to a poor start losing the in form Jack Wyllie in the second over. From there onwards the home team could not string any decent partnerships to put the pressure on Thames Ditton as they kept losing wickets even though the run rate was very healthy. At the tenth over mark Newdigate had lost 6 wickets for 65 runs and the decision of electing to bat first was looking a horrific one for the home skipper. Hiten Patel, who has been in fine form this year kept Newdigate in the hunt with a well made 34 before being out caught behind. Fifteen year old William Bennett and Des Harris then took upon them selves to attack the bowlers and give their side a decent score that the bowlers could defend and put on a fifty run partnership for the 7th wicket before both fell in quick succession. Bennett making a hard hit 27 and Harris 28.Newdigate were all out for a well under par 154 in only the 27th over giving Thames Ditton a very good opportunity to seal their first win in the league. M Smith took 3 wickets for Thames Ditton and was well supported by Meldrum and Dykes who took two wickets apiece.
In reply, the visiting side looked in a hurry to finish the game off as they came out all guns blazing. With this came the opening that Newdigate wanted as Ben Crook cleaned up David Morgan's stumps. Young Jose De Castro joined in the party and took a further two wickets to put the match on an even scale. Matt Heponstall made sure his intentions were clear early on as he took 18 off one over of the home team skipper Ruky Wickremasinghe. This prompted the bowling change and with Des Harris and Harry Ramsey taking over, the pair kept the run rate down and made sure that Thames Ditton was not going to make the target easily. Ramsey bowled a very impressive five over spell to take 2 for 11. Des Harris finished his 8 over spell with great figurers of 3 for 14, which included the wicket of Heponstall (58) falling to a superb catch in the deep by Bennett. DeCastro came on and took a further wicket to finish on 3 for 30. He also had a great part to play in the fielding as he took a stunning one handed catch to sum up Newdigate's excellent fielding performance.
Thames Ditton fell 20 runs short of the target as they were bowled out in just the 33rd over for 134. An excellent win for the home side with everyone contributing towards making an under par score defendable and pulled out a win to the great cheers from all the parents and supporters who watched on closely.
