Valley End 207-7 decvs. Newdigate 109-0 ( Match Abandoned )
Newdigate Sunday travelled to Valley End with heavy showers in the forecast. The home skipper Graham Messenger won the toss and decided to make use on a track that had produced over 500 runs on the past two matches. Valley End openers got off to a steady start with the occasional ball travelling to the short square boundary. Stephen Kehl and Jason Wharam beat the bat on many occasions but the breakthrough did not come for the visiting side. The openers put on 70 before Alex Southon bowled both Sam Reedman for a well made 55 and his fellow opener for 13. Newdigate then pulled things back with a further two wickets to put the balance on even at the drinks break. Matt Mclaughlan and skipper Messenger started to find the big shots to pull things towards the home side. Paul Bettesworth came on and had Mclaughlan (21) caught in the deep in his first over to bring up his 200 wicket for Newdigate. Messenger soon fell for a well made 65 and the declaration came with the score on 207. Ben Crook 2/37 and Southan 3/41 were amongst the wickets for Newdigate.
Newdigate started the reply looking for their third consecutive win for the Sunday 1s.Openers Alex Southon and Paul Bettesworth got Newdigate off to a steady start but then stared to find the boundary with ease. With the predicted showers starting to fall both batters pushed the scoring rate to get Newdigate to 71 off the first ten overs. Bettesworth (53*) soon went on to bring up a well made fifty and was closely followed by Southan (51*) and when the rain did finally come down Newdigate were well placed on chasing down the target with 109 runs on the board without loss of any wickets. Unfortunately the rain did not stop and a well played match had to be called off much to the disappointment of the visiting side. Nevertheless a good game played by two teams with great spirit.
Newdigate Sunday 1s now look forward to next week when they take on Purley-on-Thames in the nPower village cup match at home.
