Sunday 1st XI Reports

03/05/07 - Wraysbury (NVC)
Newdigate 250 - 7  vs Wraysbury 211 all out

Newdigate entertained Wraysbury in the second round of the nPower Village Knockout Competion in front of a crowd of at times upwards of 150 people. The reason for so much support was that Newdigate had entered and won a competition run by one of the competition's sponsors, Scrumpy Jack and Alec Stewart O.B.E. was there conducting a master class in the nets for the juniors and mingling and signing autographs for the entire afternoon. Another attraction was the nPower girls who posed for photographs and sold raffle tickets.

Newdigate got off to an excellent start of 61 from just ten overs. Richard Callcut (19) and Ruky Wickremasinghe (37) exploited the pace of S.Kerim but struggled against the accurate seam bowling of S.Kerim, nevertheless when they were both dismissed Newdigate had created a good base. The in form Dan Jones came to the crease and hit a magnificent 91 not out which included three memorable sixes and he was ably assisted by Mark Rance (14) and Sam MacDonald (24). Kibble bowled well for Wraysbury and took 4-47 but the Newdigate players were pretty happy with their total of 250-7 from their allotted 40 overs.

Wraysbury had a superb start and rapidly reached 60-0 from just eight overs. Allan Cooper 2-37 from 8 overs) then bowled the dangerous J.Mohan (39) and Ruky Wickremasinghe then snared R.Yasin (32) thanks to a rapid stumping by keeper, Paul Bettesworth. N. Chowan (41) kept the score going but he was losing partners at an alarming rate. A tight spell from Wickremasinghe (3-30 from 9 overs) and Callcut put the brake on the run rate and Wraysbury had to take risks. The position looked comfortable enough for Newdigate but they had not reckoned on fireworks from S. Karim (50) and two big sixes from A. Ibrahim, but still wickets fell at the right time and Sam MacDonald registered a useful three wickets and Wraysbury's spirited resistance came to an end when Des Harris had Karim caught by the excellent Bettesworth.

This was a very happy day at Newdigate with lots of people enjoying a very entertaining match which was played in an excellent spirit.
