Newdigate U11  266-5 vs. Lingfield U11 275-0

Newdigate under 11s found themselves in the unfortunate position of having to beat Lingfield in the last match of the season in order to win the league. Unfortunate because they were unbeaten and their opponents had lost two matches but they were in this dilemma due to losing points because of cancellations owing to bad weather.

Newdigate batted first and found themselves bogged down due to good bowling and disciplined fielding from the Lingfield team. Charlie Wyllie top scored with 14 but everyone else struggled to get on top of the bowling and ended up with a below par 266. This was the first time this season that the side had failed to pass 300 and credit is due to the excellent Lingfield bowling.

In this form of cricket anything can happen and wickets are the key to restricting batting sides. Lingfield showed a similar level of discipline with their batting as they showed with their bowling and gradually accumulated runs. The total was passed with four overs to go and the last two batsmen, J.Batty and J.Unwin knew what they had to do. Key bowlers, Andrew Kehl and Charlie Wyllie bowled their hearts out but they could not get passed this obdurate duo as they carefully steered their team to a well earned victory. Newdigate failed to take a single wicket which is a credit to this determined Lingfield side.

This was Newdigate's only defeat of the season but the dejected look on the boy's faces showed that they had been beaten by the better side on the day and the championship was not to be theirs.
