Newdigate CC 284-7 beat Reigate Priory 242-7

The Newdigate U11 Colts skippered and marshalled by Finn Osborne welcomed Reigate Priory on an overcast and cool evening for the first League Cup fixture. Reigate won the toss and elected to field first and Newdigate promptly set about the task in hand confidently. Bygrave showed class and hit out impressively and Bennett (9) moved the scoring along nicely. The middle order of Wheeler, Skipton, Ronald, Fenton Chambers and Turner all contributed well and though wickets limited several of their overall run totals their running and stroke play were a delight to the crowd. and following standout contributions from skipper Finn Osborne (16) and Warne (13) supported by Quigley capped a fine overall batting performance. After the break and excellent tea provided by the home team, the rapid Newdigate opening bowling of Marley Bygrave and George Warne immediately had Reigate on the back foot limiting their run rate considerably. The introduction of Oliver Turner and James Bennett kept to this pattern and as often the case, Oliver Turner (3-0-14-2) provided the breakthrough with 2 wickets in succession. The Newdigate fielding was as ever sharp and alert, keeping pressure on the batsmen and it was no surprise that firstly Oakley Wheeler (2-0-7-1) and then the swing bowling of Frankie Shipton (3-0-11-1) paid dividends to a Reigate batting finding runs hard to come by. Tom Quigley (2-0-4-0) and Jack Ronald who had Joe Gregory brilliantly caught in the covers by Wheeler turned the screw. Returning to complete the bowling with his partner Bygrave, Warne eventually got his reward with 2 wickets to return 3-0-11-2 and Reigate had by the close compiled only 242-7 in their reply. The spirit amongst the victorious Newdigate players right through the game was impressive to all and with such a well balanced and ever improving squad the future of this particular Newdigate Colts team is indeed promising.
