Horley U9 299-4 vs Newdigate U9 292-5

 

On an overcast day Newdigate travelled to Horley for this under 9 league match. Horley batted first and openers Oscar Flack and Toby Stevenson made a very positive start and put on 31 runs but Jack Duncan and Morgan  Hamilton then bowled tightly to peg down the scoring. Nicholas Duncan, playing in his first match took two wickets in an over but it was the spirited hitting of Guy Derham which enabled Horley to finish on a commendable total of 299. At the last training session much work was done on the Newdigate players' fielding and backing up and the difference was noticable, however too many players are wondering in too close resulting in shots going to the boundary which should be restricted to singles.

The Newdigate reply was slow in getting going and when Henry Tucker took two wickets in successive balls and the rain started falling the total looked impossible. With four overs to go and the total on 255 - enter the Duncan brothers. With skillful running between the wickets and positive striking they pushed the score up and there were worried faces on the Horley supporters, however they kept their nerve and the Newdigate total ended on 292 with Jack Duncan scoring 17 runs and being named player of the match.
