Under 9s - East Surrey Colts League

31/07/2010 Southern Rail & Kenley (h)
Newdigate U9 221 vs. Southern Rail & Kenley 311

A very young Newdigate under 9 team was comprehensively beaten by a strong Southern Rail & Kenley side who recorded their straight eight out of eight win in the league.
Confronted with some accurate seam bowling the Newdigate batsmen seemed to be in a trance and wickets fell at a rapid rate. After 12 overs the score had only lifted to 213. Much time has been spent on Monday training sessions covering the merits of playing straight but these skills seemed to have deserted the home team as they subsided to 221 after their 20 overs. Every one of the visitors bowlers bowled accurately and with purpose and the fielding was sharp and purposeful.
With only 221 to defend, the team talk was all about accurate bowling and constant backing up. In fairness Newdigate managed to pick up their game but Kenley played carefully and only lost three wickets despite some very keen fielding, and it was a credit to the Newdigate team that they never let their heads drop and the call 'walking in with the bowler' resonated across the Brocus throughout the game.
This has been an excellent season for the under 9s who last season lost every game. Quite a few members of this team will be going to a special training session at the Oval on the 25th August which hopefully will improve their technique for next season.
